About
Uhtred the Bold (killed 1016), Earl of Northumbria, relieved Durham from the Scots as a young man; the heads of the defeated were washed and spiked on the walls; and was murdered at Wiheal on his way to submit to Cnut, strangled behind a curtain by his enemy Thurbrand. His house held Bamburgh for generations before and after; the feud his murder started ran for sixty years.
