About

William d'Aubigny, third Earl of Arundel, stood at Runnymede in 1215 as one of the twenty-five surety barons of Magna Carta, then took the cross and sailed for Egypt. He survived the terrible Damietta campaign only to die on the road home, near Rome, in the spring of 1221. He married Mabel of Chester, and through their daughter Isabel the surety's blood joins this line - one of six of the twenty-five in this ancestry.

Research notes

✓ WILLIAM D'AUBIGNY (de Albini), 3rd Earl of ARUNDEL/Sussex (d. shortly before 30 Mar 1221 at Cainell near Rome, returning from the DAMIETTA crusade), A MAGNA CARTA SURETY (Runnymede 15 Jun 1215); m. Mabel of Chester; father of Isabel (our line). Another surety enters the tree - and by a fourth road, Damietta claims another of our ancestors' kin.
