About

William de Ferrers, third Earl of Derby, joined the Young King's rebellion in 1173, was captured and ransomed, and redeemed the adventure entirely: he took the cross with Richard the Lionheart and died in the siege lines before Acre in 1190, among the thousands the Third Crusade's great siege consumed. His son carried the earldom home.
