About
William de Warenne, son and heir apparent of the sixth Earl of Surrey, was killed in a tournament at Croydon in December 1286 - the sport claiming him at thirty as it claimed so many. His daughter Alice was born after his death; he never saw her, never wore the earldom, and yet through that posthumous child the Warenne inheritance descended to the FitzAlans and to this family.
