About
William Hunte of Gosfield in Essex is the head of the documented Hunt line, and everything Irish in this family that descends from the Earls of Oxford runs back through him. He married Ellen Cracherode of Cust Hall at Toppesfield and they had eleven children. He died in August 1552, and he and his wife are both buried in Gosfield church.

DOCUMENTED (Burke's LGI 'Hunt of Cummer More' lineage, pp. 334/336, read from print 21 Jul 2026, citing the Visitation of Essex 1614): William Hunte, of Gosfield, co. Essex; m. Ellen Cracherode, of Cust Hall, Toppesfield; d. 12 Aug 1552, both buried in Gosfield church; eleven children, the eldest being Henry (our line). Head of the documented Hunt line. Added 21 Jul 2026. [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 24 Jul 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.] ||HUNT ANCESTRY = HONEST FLOOR/SOFT WALL (assessed 7 Aug 2026)|| William Hunt described himself in his own will as 'yeoman' (William Hunt the elder of Gosfield, yeoman; a Coroner of the shire) - his family were Essex YEOMEN, not pedigreed gentry, and it was the Cracherode marriage (and his son's marriage to Jane Vere) that lifted the family. His own parentage is NOT reliably documented: online trees give 'Henry Hunt & Ann' but this is weakly/unsourced and the various 'Le Hunt / Lyncolne / Phillip' Geni constructs are spurious conflations. His parents are therefore DELIBERATELY NOT WIRED. The documented gentry ascent from this marriage runs through his WIFE, Ellen Cracherode (now extended to the 1341 Crachrodes), not through him.
