Research notes

✓ William II de Lancaster, baron of Kendal, son of William I fitz Gilbert de Lancaster by Gundred de Warenne, countess of Warwick: a charter of Henry II (reciting the Cockersand descent) names 'Willielmum secundum' as son of 'primus Willielmum de Lancaster, baronem de Kendale, qui prius vocabatur de Tailboys' and his wife 'Gundredam comitissam Warwic'; the Cockersand manuscript names him son of William de Lancaster and husband of 'Helewisiam'. Buried at Furness - his grandson William III's charter of 6 Nov 1240 records that 'avi mei ... Willielmi de Lancastre' lay there. Medieval Lands notes he must have been an infant when he 'consented' to his father's charters of [1153/60] - either the charters name an older William by the first wife, or his birth is c.1154/56 as his wife's chronology suggests. m. Helewise de Stuteville, da. of Robert III de Stuteville of Cottingham (she m. 2ndly Hugh de Morville, 3rdly William fitz Ralph). Also father of the illegitimate Gilbert and Jordan de Lancaster.
