About
William V 'the Great' (969-1030), Duke of Aquitaine, was offered the crown of Italy for his son and, after two journeys over the Alps, had the wisdom to refuse it. His court at Poitiers was among the most learned in Europe; Fulbert of Chartres served him, and contemporaries compared the duke, a collector of books who read into the night, to Augustus and Theodosius. Our line runs through his sons to the troubadour duke and Eleanor.
