The Webbs: Cambridgeshire clergy who crossed to Cork
The Rev. Jonas Travers Jones married Catherine Webb in 1829, of an English family that had recently arrived in Ireland. Burke’s heads the line with George Webb (1729–1800), born in Cambridgeshire, who settled at Maryborough as the town’s Post Master; his eldest son, the Rev. Richard Webb, Rector of Ringrone, entered Trinity in 1773 as a sizar, the poorest student grade, the mark of a modest family newly over from England. George’s own father, an earlier George Webb of Trumpington (b. 1690), is as far back as the line can be pushed and that last step only on a family-bible transcript.
Burke’s records that Richard Webb’s brother Arthur Webb, of the East India Company, was “unfortunately killed in a duel, fought with Mr Robert Jones, at Calcutta, in 1790.” A Webb was shot dead by a Jones in India, two generations before the Webbs and the Joneses of Drombeg married into one another.
