About

Adelaide (c.1062-1120), Countess of Vermandois in her own right, was the last of the landed Carolingians: with her the male-line inheritance of Charlemagne's blood in Vermandois came down to a single heiress. She married Hugh the Great, brother of King Philip I of France, and their daughter Isabel de Vermandois carried this double royalty; Carolingian and Capetian; into the English baronage, where she became one of our most-travelled ancestresses.
