About
Ælfthryth of Wessex (d.929) was a daughter of Alfred the Great, married to Baldwin II, Count of Flanders; himself a grandson of the Judith who had briefly been her father's stepmother. From this Anglo-Flemish match descend all the later counts of Flanders, including Matilda of Flanders, wife of William the Conqueror: so Alfred's blood returned to England in 1066 on both sides of the battle. She is our ancestress through the Flemish counts.
