Edward the Elder (874-924), King of the Anglo-Saxons, took his father Alfred's defensive achievement and turned it into conquest: in partnership with his remarkable sister Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, he reduced the Danish-held east midlands fortress by fortress until all England south of the Humber obeyed him. By his death the kings of the Scots, Strathclyde and Northumbria had all acknowledged him. Our line runs through his sons Edmund I and; via his daughter Eadgifu; the kings of France.
