About
Alfonso de Vere was a younger son of the fifth Earl of Oxford, and his oddly un-English forename honours Alfonso the Tenth of Castile, whose house had married into the English royal family in his lifetime. He never held the earldom, but it was his son who inherited it when the senior line failed, and it is through him that this family descends.

✓ DOCUMENTED (standard CP account - see provenance note on the 3rd Earl): ALFONSO DE VERE (the exotic forename honouring Alfonso X of Castile, brother-in-law of Edward I's queen's house), younger son of the 5th Earl; of Great Hormead etc.; d. 1328/9. m. JANE, dau. of SIR RICHARD FOLIOT (note-only). NEVER EARL HIMSELF - but his son John inherited the earldom in 1331 when the 6th Earl's line failed: the one non-comital rung in the medieval ladder.
