Robert de Vere, fifth Earl of Oxford, fought at Lewes in 1264 on the barons' side against Henry the Third, which was the family's second appearance in a constitutional quarrel in fifty years. He married Alice de Sanford. This family descends not from his elder son but from a younger one, Alfonso.

ALICE DE SANFORD; d. before 7 Sep 1296. OUR LINE runs through his YOUNGER son ALFONSO - the 6th Earl (d. 1331, his elder son's line, failing in the direct male) is COLLATERAL and not entered.
