About
Alfonso de Vere was a younger son of the fifth Earl of Oxford, and his oddly un-English forename honours Alfonso the Tenth of Castile, whose house had married into the English royal family in his lifetime. He never held the earldom, but it was his son who inherited it when the senior line failed, and it is through him that this family descends.

JANE, dau. of SIR RICHARD FOLIOT (note-only). ||COKAYNE 'VERE' p.26 READ 7 Aug 2026|| Alfonso's ELDER BROTHER Hugh de Vere ('2d s. of Robert, 5th Earl of Oxford, by Alice, da. and coheir of Gilbert de Sanford') was summoned to Parliament as LORD VERE 1299-1318 in a barony of his own; he m. Dionysia, dau. and heir of Sir William de Monchensi by Joan, 5th sister and coheir of Anselm Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, and DIED WITHOUT ISSUE, the barony becoming extinct. Collateral, note-only - but it independently confirms ALICE DE SANFORD (I99535) as the wife of the 5th Earl and therefore as Alfonso's mother, which is our rung. NEVER EARL HIMSELF - but his son John inherited the earldom in 1331 when the 6th Earl's line failed: the one non-comital rung in the medieval ladder. Direct ancestor. Added 22 Jul 2026.
