VI, 'Ormond' pp.139-146 (photographed & read 23 Jul 2026)., p.141): ANNE, dau. of John (de Welles), LORD WELLES, by Margaret (or Eleanor) de Mowbray, dau. of John (de Mowbray), Lord Mowbray; wife of James, 3rd Earl of Ormond; mother of Sir Richard of Poolestown (our line). Direct ancestress. Added 23 Jul 2026. *** CAUTION (25 Jul 2026, on Aynsley's query about a Mowbray/Edward-I gateway through Anne): THE MOWBRAY DESCENT DOES NOT HOLD AS A DIRECT LINE. Cokayne (our source) HEDGES her mother as 'Margaret (OR Eleanor) de Mowbray' - a flag of his own uncertainty. The modern consensus (Wikipedia/Geni/WikiTree/Find-a-Grave) and, decisively, the CHRONOLOGY make Anne (b.c.1360, d.1397) the dau. of John, 4TH LORD WELLES, by MAUD DE ROS. The Mowbray who carried the Thomas-of-Brotherton -> EDWARD I blood was ELEANOR DE MOWBRAY (d.1387, dau. of the 4th Baron Mowbray x Elizabeth Segrave), and she married Anne's BROTHER John, 5TH LORD WELLES - i.e. Anne's SISTER-IN-LAW. That royal blood therefore enters the Welles family COLLATERALLY (Anne's nieces/nephews) and DOES NOT DESCEND TO US. Even on Cokayne's contrary reading, a Mowbray mother old enough for Anne would be a dau. of the 3rd Baron x Joan of Lancaster = a LANCASTER/Henry III line, not Brotherton/Edward I. NOT WIRED as a gateway; Anne's maternal line left note-only pending a decisive primary source. A collateral in-law link, NOT a second Plantagenet route. *** RESOLVED 25 Jul 2026 (primary sources via BHO/IPM trail + Douglas Richardson's published C.P. Addition to CP 12(2):441 sub Welles): Anne's mother WAS MAUD DE ROOS, dau. of William de Ros, 2nd Lord Ros of Helmsley, by Margery de Badlesmere - proven by SEVEN independent evidences, conclusively a 1367 Common Pleas suit naming the Welles heir's custodian 'Maud daughter of William de Roos of Helmsley', plus Maud's 1373 seal with the Roos arms, the Rievaulx cartulary pedigree, the Visitation of the North, and the Nunney heraldry (Welles impaling Roos). The Mowbray (Eleanor/Alianore) married Anne's BROTHER the 5th Lord Welles - the collateral conflation confirmed. CORRECT MATERNAL LINE NOW WIRED (I99807-810 / F99692-693): Anne <- Maud de Roos <- William de Ros 2nd Lord Ros of Helmsley (de Ros of Helmsley = of the surety Robert de Ros, note-only) x MARGERY DE BADLESMERE, a SISTER of the existing Maud de Badlesmere (I99539) - so Anne's maternal line CONVERGES on the Badlesmere/Margaret-de-Clare/Thomas-de-Clare-of-Thomond branch already in the tree.
