About
Aubrey de Vere the third was created first Earl of Oxford in 1142 by the Empress Maud, a title confirmed by Stephen and by Henry the Second, and he held the hereditary Master Chamberlainship of England. For a time he was also Count of Guisnes in right of his first wife. He founded the earldom that his family would hold for five and a half centuries.
