Robert de Vere, third Earl of Oxford, was one of the twenty-five barons chosen in 1215 to hold King John to Magna Carta. When the King's seal went on the charter at Runnymede, this family's ancestor was among the men appointed to enforce it. He married Isabel de Bolebec.
