About
Aubrey de Vere, tenth Earl of Oxford, came to the earldom by an unusual route: his nephew, Richard the Second's favourite and Duke of Ireland, forfeited everything in 1388, and Parliament restored the estates and the title to the uncle four years later. He tried without success to recover the family's hereditary Chamberlainship. He died in April 1400.

ALICE, dau. of John, 2nd LORD FITZWALTER, by Eleanor, dau. of Henry, LORD PERCY (the FitzWalter/Percy ascent = printed peerage, note-only, extendable). d. 23 Apr 1400, probably bur. Hadleigh; his widow d. 29 Apr 1401. CHAIN ABOVE NOW WIRED (22 Jul 2026, at Aynsley's direction): son of JOHN, 7TH EARL (Crecy/Poitiers) x MAUD DE BADLESMERE; the full spine to the Domesday Aubrey I is entered (I99523-539), with the dog-legs marked collateral (2nd Earl d.s.p.; 6th Earl's line; his own elder brother the 8th Earl and nephew the 9th - Richard II's Duke of Ireland, d.s.p. 1392, killed by a boar at Louvain - whose forfeiture preceded this Earl's restoration). Colne Priory; widow became a nun at St Osyth's) x ALICE DE CLARE (dau. of Gilbert FitzRichard, Lord of Clare & Tunbridge; sister of Gilbert, 1st Earl of Pembroke) <- AUBREY DE VERE I (b. probably before 1040; a Norman who took his name from VER in the Cotentin, with Breton connexions; granted by the CONQUEROR the great estates of the English thegn WULFWINE in Essex/Suffolk/Cambs; seized Ramsey Abbey's lands held by Wulfwine; 1084 attested as 'Aubrey the Chamberlain'; 1086 held 14 estates in Essex in chief; PLANTED A VINEYARD at the head of his barony, Castle Hedingham; d. 1112, bur. COKAYNE'S CAUTION (Appendix J): the 1086 rung is ~ - Aubrey I was not seigneur of Ver, and 'proof of identity is wanting' between the 1066 grantee, the 1086 tenant-in-chief and the post-1102 sheriff: 'possible that there were 2, or even 3, successive Aubreys'.
