About

Bernard of Italy was a grandson of Charlemagne, made King of Italy as a boy. He rebelled against his uncle Louis the Pious, was sentenced to death, had the sentence commuted to blinding, and died of it two days later, aged about twenty. Louis did public penance for it for the rest of his life. Bernard's descendants became the counts of Vermandois, and this family descends from him.
