About
Pepin (777-810), King of Italy, was Charlemagne's second son, crowned king by Pope Hadrian at four years old and set over Lombard Italy, which he governed for nearly thirty years. He campaigned against the Avars; helping break the ring-fortress of their khans; and against Venice in the lagoons. He predeceased his father, but his son Bernard kept the Italian crown, and through Bernard the male line of Charlemagne descends to the counts of Vermandois and to us.
