About
Crínán of Dunkeld (d.1045), lay abbot of Dunkeld and lord of Atholl, stood at the junction of church and crown in eleventh-century Scotland: hereditary head of St Columba's great abbey, he married Bethoc, King Malcolm II's heiress-daughter, and so fathered the House of Dunkeld that ruled Scotland for two and a half centuries. He died as he had lived, in the dynasty's quarrels; killed in battle in 1045, in arms against Macbeth on behalf of his slain son Duncan's cause.
