✓ David de Barry, of Olethan, s. and h. of David the Barrach Mór, 'called David Oge [junior] and Anbuille [i.e. of the blows]'; Lord Justiciar of Ireland 1267; 'may perhaps be regarded as the first of his family to obtain the status of a Peer as LORD BARRY, BARRYMORE, or BUTTEVANT' (a prescriptive Irish barony; Lodge's '1st Viscount of Buttevant' is 'grotesquely untrue'); 'He d. in 1278.' (CP I p.437). Father of John 2nd Lord (d.s.p.) and David FitzDavid 3rd Lord. Source: Complete Peerage 2nd edn vol. I (1910), 'Barry, Barrymore or Buttevant' pp.435-444 (early portion rewritten by G.D. Burtchaell from Rev. E. Barry's 'Barrymore', JCHAS 2nd ser. vols v-viii, 1899-1902), read 26 Oct 2026 (archive.org djvu text). [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 26 Oct 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.] ||26 Oct 2026|| Rev. E. Barry (1902) queries this rung: he writes that Sir David FitzWilliam (slain at Callan 1261) 'was succeeded by [his nephew?] David [fitzJohn?] de Barri, Lord of Olethan, who was Justiciary of Ireland A.D. 1267, and died A.D. 1278' - i.e. he was unsure whether the Justiciar was son or nephew of the Barrach Mór. Burtchaell in CP I p.437 gives 's. and h.' without comment, as do the Carew (1600) and McFirbis (1650) pedigrees ('David Mór; David Óg'). Kept as CP has it; grade ✓ on CP, with Rev. Barry's doubt noted. Source: Rev. Edmond Barry, 'Barrymore: records of the Barrys of County Cork' (Cork 1902; reprinted from JCHAS 2nd ser. v-viii), archive.org barrymorerecords00barr, read 26 Oct 2026.
