Research notes

~ Donough (Donnchadh) O'Brien of Carrigogunnell, Lord of Pobblebrien, son of Brian Dubh the founder of the Carrigogunnell house; father of More, wife of Sir John of Desmond (d. 1536) and mother of James FitzJohn, 13th Earl of Desmond (CP IV: 'More, da. of Donogh O'Brien, of Carrigogunnell'). His existence and place are ANNAL-GRADE: AFM 1580.12 names the lord of Pobblebrien as 'Brian Duv, the son of Mahon, son of Donough, son of Brian Duv O'Brien', and AFM 1585.19 his successor as 'Brian Duv, the son of Donough, son of Mahon, son of Donough, son of Brian Duv O'Brien'. His identification as MORE'S father is by chronology (~): her husband was a younger son of the 8th Earl (d. 1468), so she was born c.1465-80 and her father flourished c.1440-1500 - which fits this Donough (son of a man active c.1420) and not his great-grandson. STRUCTURAL NOTE - two Donoughs in this house: DONOUGH I (this man) = son of Brian Dubh the founder, father of Mahon; DONOUGH II = son of that Mahon, brother of Brian Dubh (lord 1580) and father of Brian Dubh (lord 1585, grantee of the surrender-and-regrant of 1584 as 'Brien Duffe O'Brien Mac Donagh', living 1615 per the Harleian pedigree cited by Hogan). Do not merge them. Wife not recorded. Source: Annals of the Four Masters (O'Donovan ed.) 1426.4, 1580.12, 1585.19, CELT T100005D-E, read 27 Oct 2026; Complete Peerage 2nd ed. vol.
