About
Edmund I (921-946), King of the English, fought at Brunanburh beside his half-brother Æthelstan at eighteen, and as king won back the Five Boroughs of the Danelaw; a deliverance the chroniclers set down in verse. His death was sudden and strange: at the feast of St Augustine at Pucklechurch he was stabbed defending his steward from a convicted outlaw who had returned to the hall. He was twenty-five. His son Edgar continues our line.
