Edward the Exile Ætheling

Edward the Exile (c.1016-1057) was the son of Edmund Ironside, sent abroad as an infant when Cnut took England; by a tradition, with instructions that he be quietly killed. He was raised instead at the court of Hungary, married Agatha, and after nearly forty years was recalled to England as heir to his childless great-uncle Edward the Confessor. He landed in 1057 and died within days, before he ever saw the king; one of history's great might-have-beens. His daughter St Margaret carried the royal line to Scotland, and to us.
