Eleanor of Aquitaine

Eleanor of Aquitaine was the most remarkable woman of the twelfth century by almost any measure. Duchess of Aquitaine in her own right, Queen of France and then Queen of England, she went on crusade, was imprisoned for sixteen years by her second husband for backing her sons against him, outlived almost everyone, and was the mother of two kings. She is the mother of King John, from whom this family descends.
