About
Emma was the Lord Mayor's wife, and before that the widow of a London citizen named Pyking. She brought a son from her first marriage into the Verney household and bore Sir Ralph three more children, Margaret among them. Her maiden surname was never recorded in any document this project has found, and the record honours the blank rather than filling it.
Research notes
✓ EMMA, wife of Sir Ralph Verney - so named in the 1509 Raleigh will (primary). Surname unrecorded there; leave blank. Direct ancestress. Added 8 Aug 2026 (the Raleigh royal door - consolation wave after the St Leger door closed; full write-up in RANKED LEADS addendum). ||IDENTIFIED - AND AN HONEST WALL (Verney Papers, Camden Soc. 1853, memoir + pedigree, read 9 Aug 2026 from Aynsley's archive.org link)|| Emme was the WIDOW OF ONE PYKING of London (by whom a son, John Pyking) before marrying Sir Ralph Verney; by Sir Ralph she had John, Ralph, MARGARET (m. Sir Edward Ralegh of Farnborough - our line) and Beatrice (m. Henry Danvers, mercer of London). Her MAIDEN FAMILY IS UNRECORDED - the Camden editor's own pedigree leaves her 'Emme, d. of ...' BLANK. A London citizen-class remarriage; no evidence of gentry parentage. The Elizabeth-de-Clare test on her is CLOSED: unknowable, and nothing suggests Grey or Ferrers. Floor, permanently honest.
