About
Margaret Verney was a daughter of the Lord Mayor of London, and she married Sir Edward Raleigh of Farnborough, trading City money for Warwickshire land in the classic manner of her century. She is one of the best-evidenced women in this tree: her father's will of 1478 names her as dame Margarete Raleghe, and her son's will of 1509 names her parents in turn, two independent testaments closing around one woman. Through her grandson's marriage the line runs on to Bridget Raleigh and the road to Edward I.
Research notes
✓✓ MARGARET VERNEY, dau. of Sir Ralph Verney, Lord Mayor of London, by Emma - both parents named in her husband's 1509 will (see his record). Mercer-City stock; no royal blood this side. Direct ancestress. Added 8 Aug 2026 (the Raleigh royal door - consolation wave after the St Leger door closed; full write-up in RANKED LEADS addendum). ||PRIMARY SOURCE 9 Aug 2026|| Her father Sir Ralph Verney's own will (PCC, 1478; printed in the Camden Verney Papers) names 'my doughters dame MARGARETE RALEGHE and Beatrice Danvers' - so the Verney-Raleigh rung is will-grade, and Margaret had already 'had her preferrement at her mariage'. Her mother Emme named as executrix.
