About
Ermengarde of Anjou (d. 21 March 1076) was the daughter of Fulk Nerra, the ferocious castle-building Count of Anjou who thrice went pilgrim to Jerusalem. Married to Geoffrey of Gâtinais, she was the mother of Fulk IV and, when the male line of the elder house failed, it was through her that Anjou itself passed; every later Plantagenet descends from her. She died, the chronicle says, on the day of an eclipse.
