Ermentrude of Orléans (823-869), Queen of the West Franks, was the first wife of Charles the Bald, crowned and anointed queen in 866 in a ceremony that helped fix the ritual of Frankish queenship. A patroness of church embroidery famed for her needlework, she bore the king eleven children, and through her son Louis the Stammerer the whole later Carolingian line; and ours; descends.
