About

Gilbert de Clare, fourth Earl of Hertford and first Clare Earl of Gloucester, was one of the twenty-five barons appointed in 1215 to hold King John to Magna Carta, as his father had been before him. Father and son among the twenty-five is a rare thing. He married Isabel Marshal, daughter of the greatest knight of the age, and he is buried in the choir at Tewkesbury Abbey, before the high altar.
