About
Henry the Third came to the throne as a nine-year-old with half the country in French hands and reigned for fifty-six years, longer than any English king before George the Third. He rebuilt Westminster Abbey as it now stands. His reign produced the Barons' Wars and, in Simon de Montfort's parliament, something recognisably ancestral to the House of Commons. He was the father of Edward the First.
