Hugh Bigod 3rd Earl of Norfolk

Hugh Bigod, third Earl of Norfolk, was one of the twenty-five surety barons appointed at Runnymede in 1215 to enforce Magna Carta upon the king - and so was his father, one of only two father-and-son pairs on that list. He married Maud Marshal, eldest daughter of the great William Marshal, and died in 1225. Between his father's charter, his wife's father's regency and his own suretyship, his household touched every hinge of the crisis that made English liberty a written thing.
