About
Ida de Tosny was a royal ward who became mistress of the young-middle-aged Henry II and bore him William Longespee, later Earl of Salisbury; married then to Roger Bigod, second Earl of Norfolk, she became a countess and mother of a Magna Carta surety. For eight centuries her two families looked unrelated, until a charter in which Longespee called Ralph Bigod his brother proved the connexion and modern scholarship restored her story. This tree descends from her twice, once by the earl and once by the king - the same woman, by both her beds.

The identification of Henry II's 'countess Ida' with Ida de Tosny wife of Roger Bigod is the accepted modern finding, anchored by William Longespee's own charter naming Ralph Bigod his brother. Her own Tosny parentage REMAINS ~ unwired - separate question, unchanged. The Maud Marshal / Aveline de Clare / Isabel de Vermandois pattern, a fourth time.
