About
John Hunt was born in 1582, the eldest surviving son of the High Sheriff of Essex, and he took the family to Ireland. He served as a captain and then a colonel, and he was one of the men later known as the '49 officers, whose service to the Crown before June 1649 was rewarded with Irish land. His commission as colonel is dated 24 April 1650. His son Vere would take the ground at Curragh that the family held for the next two and a half centuries.

DOCUMENTED (Burke's LGI 'Hunt of Cummer More'): John Hunt, b. 1582, eldest surviving son of Henry Hunte, High Sheriff of Essex; Captain in the Army; "took service in Ireland, and was one of 'the 49 officers.'
