About
Vere Hunt came to Ireland as an officer in Cromwell's army, fought at the siege of Youghal, and in 1657 settled on confiscated land at Curragh in County Limerick and Glangoole in Tipperary. He served as a commissioner for County Limerick in 1657 and again in 1660, raising the supplies the government demanded. He was dead before June 1681. He is the founder of the Irish half of this family, and the estate he took in 1657 stayed in his descendants' hands for two and a half centuries, latterly under the name Curragh Chase.

DOCUMENTED (Burke's LGI 'Hunt of Cummer More' + Limerick Archives P22 collection list) - THE CROMWELLIAN SETTLER: Vere Hunt, of Ballygholan, subsequently of Glangoole, co. Tipperary, and of Curragh Chase, co. Limerick. Took part in the SIEGE OF YOUGHAL; "in 1657 and 1660 he was appointed one of the Commissioners of co. Limerick for raising the supplies then demanded for the public service"; the Limerick Archives list has him arriving as an officer in the Cromwellian army and SETTLING AT CURRAGH IN 1657 (380 acres formerly John Fitzgerald's; also Glengoole, co. Tipperary). Died at Curragh "at an advanced age"; his widow Mary administered 24 Jun 1681. Two sons: Henry ("of whom later" in Burke's - the elder, not entered here) and JOHN (our line, the younger). Direct ancestor - the first Hunt in Ireland. Added 21 Jul 2026.
