About

John Hunt of Glangoole and Curragh Chase was born in 1633 and died in 1736, according to Cokayne, at the alleged age of a hundred and three. The two dates were recorded by people who had no idea they were corroborating each other, and they agree exactly. He married a daughter of the Reverend John Hicks, rector of Kilcooley.

Research notes

DOCUMENTED (Burke's LGI 'Hunt of Cummer More'; b. 1633 also per Limerick Archives P22; d. 1736 "at the alleged age of 103" per Cokayne, Complete Baronetage V p.415 note a - the 103 back-computes exactly to the 1633 birth, added 21 Jul 2026): John Hunt, of Glangoole, co. Tipperary, and of Curragh Chase. BIRTH-ORDER CONFLICT (flagged 21 Jul 2026): Burke's LGI 'Cummer More' makes him the YOUNGER son (Henry "of whom later" the elder); Burke's Peerage DE VERE article p.296 makes him "the ELDER son". Unresolved - does not affect the descent. The De Vere article adds a 2ND MARRIAGE: "Miss Bods" [sic - possibly Boles], by whom three further sons; by the Hicks marriage "four sons and four daus." m. 1st a dau. of Rev. John Hicks, Rector of Kilcooley, co. Tipperary (our line). Children: VERE (his heir - our line), William (m. Mary, dau. of John Bury of Shannon Grove, co. Limerick), John, Daniel, Alice (m. Peter Agar), Susan (m. Rev. Henry Royse), Gertrude (m. - Tennison). Added 21 Jul 2026. [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 24 Jul 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.] DO-NOT-CONFLATE 14 Sep 2026: a Betham sketch pedigree (findmypast Betham abstracts, surfaced under a John Hunt c.1736 search, image supplied by Aynsley) shows the HUNTS OF NORTH LUFFENHAM, RUTLAND, 1681 - Thomas > John (m. Vavasour of Yorks) > Edmond (aet 70 in 1640, m. Wyburgh Bassett) - with a son 'JOHN HUNT NOW LIVING IN IRELAND' in 1681. The date-fit to THIS John (b.1633, living 1681) is seductive and WRONG to act on: this John's paternity (Vere Hunt the Cromwellian settler) is documented by Burke's LGI Cummer More + Limerick Archives P22, and the settler's widow Mary took administration 24 Jun 1681 (surviving record). The Rutland John is a different Hunt in Ireland unless strong evidence ever re-roots the family. Recorded here precisely so nobody re-fights this. Also noted: Betham has NO John Hunt of Curragh will abstract, so the 1736 probate was likely diocesan (Cashel), not prerogative - the will that recited the 1712 marriage settlement (per 'The Hunts of Limerick', quoted on WikiTree Piers-87) is lost with the diocesan records.
