About
Sir Robert de Vere was the younger son of Richard, eleventh Earl of Oxford, the Agincourt commander, and it is through him rather than through his elder brother that this family descends. His grandson succeeded to the earldom as the fifteenth Earl, a fact recorded by Cokayne in a single footnote which happens to close one of the more important joins in this whole tree.
Research notes
✓ DOCUMENTED as to the relationship (Kresen Kernow AR/1/851, 1531: "Robert de Veer, knight", father of John): SIR ROBERT DE VERE - link to the 11th Earl now ✓ DOCUMENTED (CP vol. X p.236 note c, photographed 22 Jul 2026: "The Earl left 2 sons: John, 12th Earl; and ROBERT, A KNIGHT, WHOSE GRANDSON SUC. AS 15TH EARL") - 2nd son of RICHARD DE VERE, 11TH EARL OF OXFORD, by ALICE SERGEAUX (both sons were hers - the 1st wife d.s.p. young), which is how the earldom leapt to his grandson in 1526 on the 14th Earl's line failing. His brother the 12th Earl and nephew Sir Aubrey were beheaded on Tower Hill six days apart, Feb 1461/2 (collateral); his great-nephew the 13th Earl commanded at Bosworth. The 11th Earl and the medieval de Vere line above (Earls of Oxford from 1141) = printed pedigree, note-only, NOT entered - extendable from CP vol. X (the XI/XV/XIX sections photographed when available). TOP-OF-LINE CAUTION per CP vol. X Appendix J "The Early Veres" pp.110-16 (photographed 22 Jul 2026): the line is documented CONTINUOUSLY from AUBREY II (d. c.1141, m. Alice de Clare; father of Aubrey III, 1st Earl 1141); but the DOMESDAY founder Aubrey I is softer than tradition pretends - not in fact seigneur of Ver, and "proof of identity is wanting" between the 1066 grantee, the 1086 tenant-in-chief and the post-1102 sheriff: "possible that there were 2, or even 3, successive Aubreys" (Cokayne's own words). Grade the 1086 rung ~ whenever entered. Book gem: Aubrey I's only recorded activity under the Conqueror = planting four vineyards, incl. Castle Hedingham and LAVENHAM - the same Lavenham in the 16th Earl's 1562 poor-box list. Direct ancestor. Added 22 Jul 2026; Appendix J caution added same day.
