About

John de Warenne, sixth Earl of Surrey, is the earl of the quo warranto legend: asked by what warrant he held his lands, he is said to have thrown a rusty sword on the table and answered that his ancestors came with William the Bastard and took them with that. He fought at Lewes and Evesham, changed sides with the times, and lived past seventy, dying in 1304. He married Alice de Lusignan, the king's half-sister, which put Poitou in his children's blood alongside the Conquest iron he boasted of.
