About
William de Warenne, fifth Earl of Surrey, was one of the barons by whose counsel Magna Carta was granted, Warden of the Cinque Ports, and a moderate in an immoderate age. He married Maud Marshal, William Marshal's eldest daughter and already the widow of Hugh Bigod the surety - so that Maud carried this family's line by both her marriages, and the earl's stepsons were charter men. He died in 1240.
