John fitz Richard

John fitz Richard, a Domesday tenant, is one of those men the great survey preserved like a fly in amber: a name, a holding, and a son. The son was Payn FitzJohn, Henry I's formidable sheriff of the March, and through him this line runs - the clerk's entry of 1086 flowering into three documented generations.
