About

John FitzGerald, first Earl of Kildare, was as an infant snatched from a fire at Woodstock Castle - by a pet monkey, the family always said, which is why a monkey stands as the FitzGerald crest to this day. Created Earl in 1316 for service to Edward I in the Scottish wars, he formalised what his family had long been in practice: the first power of the English of Ireland. He died the same year, and the earldom he founded ran unbroken to the Wizard Earl and Silken Thomas.
