About
Louis IV 'd'Outremer' (920/1-954), King of West Francia, earned his byname; 'from overseas'; from a boyhood spent in exile at the English court of his grandfather Edward the Elder, after his father Charles the Simple was deposed. Recalled and crowned in 936, he spent his reign wrestling with the over-mighty Hugh the Great and was for a time held captive by the Normans of Rouen. He and Gerberga of Saxony, a formidable political partner, are both our ancestors.
