About

Mabel FitzHamon was the daughter and heiress of Robert FitzHamon, the Norman conqueror of Glamorgan, and Henry the First married her to his own natural son Robert, making him Earl of Gloucester in her right. It was her inheritance that gave him the power to sustain the Empress Matilda's cause for a decade.
