✓ Margaret Basset, da. of Ralph, 1st Lord Basset of Drayton (d. 31 Dec 1299), by Hawise; mother of Ralph, 1st Earl of Stafford (I100607): the inquisition on the death of the last Lord Basset of Drayton (1390) found his heir to be 'Thomas, Earl of Stafford, s. of Hugh, s. of Ralph, s. of Margaret Basset, sister to the grandfather of the deceased' (CP II 'Basset of Drayton' p.3 n.(h)); the same note names her sister Maud, wife of Sir William Herriz. Her husband Edmund, 1st Lord Stafford (d. 1308), is the standard account (CP XII/1 'Stafford', not online) and is NOT yet wired - she stands alone as Ralph's mother until Aynsley's page arrives (noted 27 Oct 2026). [DIRECT ANCESTOR OF THE COMPILER: flag added 27 Oct 2026 by walking the tree from Aynsley, so that this marker is reliable and can be searched.] ||27 Oct 2026 - HUSBAND WIRED (✓), DATES ADDED|| CP XII/1 'Stafford' p.173: m. in or before 1298 Edmund, Lord Stafford (d. before 12 Aug 1308); 'His wife surv. him and m., 2ndly, Thomas de Pype. She d. 17 Mar. 1336/7, and was bur. at Tysoe, co. Warwick.' In 1325 she and Thomas de Pype were in the King's service with her son Ralph 'in the company of Ralph, 2nd Lord Basset (of Drayton)' - her brother (p.174). ON HER MOTHER: CP XII/1 (1953) adds 'by Joan, da. of Reynold Grey of Ruthin' to her parentage, but CP II 'Basset of Drayton' (1912) pp.2-3 shows Joan de Grey marrying the 2nd Lord Basset by a settlement of 27 Mar 1304 - six years after Margaret's own marriage - and names the 1st Lord's wife as Hawise from the Patent Roll of 11 Edw. III; so Hawise (I101994) is kept as her mother and the 1953 phrase is treated as a slip conflating the two Lords' wives. Recorded, not acted on (decided 27 Oct 2026).
