About

Margaret Cecil was a sister of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, Elizabeth the First's Lord High Treasurer and the architect of her state. She is NOT an ancestor of this family. She was one of eight people who entered this tree in a single evening in July 2026 and left it the following morning when the join beneath them was disproved. She is kept here as a record of what the checking cost.

Research notes

MARGARET CECIL (d. 1611), SISTER OF WILLIAM CECIL, LORD BURGHLEY, Lord High Treasurer to Elizabeth I - both children of RICHARD CECIL, Esq., of Burghley (d. 1553), by Jane Heckington. m. Roger Cave of Stanford; their dau. Elizabeth m. 1584 Walter Bagot of Blithfield (our line, on the ~ Lane join). Her parents Richard Cecil and Jane Heckington, and grandfather David Cecil (yeoman of the chamber to Henry VII), are abundantly documented (HoP, ODNB) but NOT entered as individuals - the group already stands three ~ steps above the proven tree; extend only if the William Lane join is ever hardened. END OF LINE as entered. Added July 2026. ||CAVE-CECIL-HECKINGTON DOSSIER BANKED - NOT EXTENDED (24 Aug 2026 handover, filed as 'GEDCOM HANDOVER - Cave-Cecil-Heckington session (24 August 2026).md')|| A full primary-sourced ascent now exists ON PAPER above this record: Margaret = da. of RICHARD CECIL of Burghley (Yeoman of the Wardrobe, d. 19 Mar 1553, bur. 22 Mar St Margaret's Westminster - NOT the 'd.1552' in Nina Green/Emerson) x JANE HECKINGTON of Bourne (c.1501-10 Mar 1587/8, blind from 1574, will PROB 11/72/303 naming 'my daughter Margaret Cave'); Jane = daughter AND HEIR of WILLIAM HEKINGTON of Bourne (d.1509, will PROB 11/16/619+640: 'Johane my doughter have all my fre londes... to the heyres of hir body') x Alice, vowess (d.1533/4, LCC WILLS 1532-34 f.114); Richard = son of DAVID CECIL of Stamford (d.1541) x Alice Dicons - STOP there, the Alltyrynys link is contested and everything above is invention (Rowse EHR 75). Margaret's brother = WILLIAM CECIL, LORD BURGHLEY. Her 2nd marriage: Erasmus Smith of Bosworth. ⚠ WHY NOT WIRED AS RECORDS: this island hangs on the Lane->Bentley join, which the master keeps DETACHED (F99025 childless by ruling; LC 3/27 test 9 Aug 2026 = confirmed-but-silent). Wiring the Cecil generations as records would smuggle the rejected join's VALUE back in. If the strong-form join is EVER re-proven, wire the whole dossier from the filed handover - it is will-grade throughout. Meanwhile: note-only, per the direct-ancestors-only rule.
