About

Marie, Countess of Ponthieu in her own right, held her Channel-coast county through the wreck of her father's politics - he had fought against the French crown at Bouvines - and kept the inheritance together for her children. A great-granddaughter of Louis VII of France, she married Simon de Dammartin, and their daughter Joan became Queen of Castile and mother of Eleanor, Edward I's beloved queen: Marie is the grandmother of the Eleanor Crosses.
