About
Joan of Ponthieu was a countess in her own right in northern France, and briefly a candidate for the hand of Henry the Third of England before she married Ferdinand the Third of Castile instead. She was the mother of Eleanor of Castile, and her county of Ponthieu passed in time to her daughter.
