About

Matilda of Ringelheim (c.892-968), Queen of the Germans, wife of Henry the Fowler, was canonised for a lifetime of prodigious charity; her biographers say she taught herself the psalter between the duties of a queen and emptied the treasury on the poor, to her sons' fury. She founded the great abbey of Quedlinburg, where she is buried beside her husband. Mother of Emperor Otto the Great and of our ancestress Gerberga, she is one of the saints in this family's line.
