||THE FAMILY BOOK READ 7 Aug 2026|| ✓ NEWPORT WHITE of KILMOYLAN, 'second of the name', third and youngest son of the Rev. Newport White by Frances Foster; m. MARY, 'ONLY CHILD OF HENRY IEVERS, ESQ.' HE BUILT THE NEW HOUSE AT KILMOYLAN with part of the money left him by his brother RICHARD, who died young at Smyrna. On 1 May 1763 he wrote in his own hand 'I commenced on the Lands of Doon, for 3 lives and 31 yrs, at the yearly rent of £255' - and the book records the family's regret that had he offered a fine in guineas rather than pounds he would have had a lease for ever of Doon, the loss being reckoned at £700 a year when it fell in to Lord Clonmel. ⚠ DEATH DATE MADE PRECISE 7 Aug 2026: he DIED 13 APRIL 1780, AGED ONLY 52 (so b. 1727-28, as already entered). The book says he was so distressed at the death of his daughter Nancy that he continued walking about the house at Kilmoylan in his stockings until he too died. HIS WILL, dated 11 APRIL 1780, two days before his death: to his wife Mary his chair and chair horse, the furniture of one room, and £5 to buy mourning; £600 to his daughter Mary; £500 to his son John; £700 to his son Richard (I81027, our line); £700 to his son Henry; £500 to his son Ben; £5 to the poor of the parish of Doon; ALL HIS LANDS to his son Newport. Executors John White, Newport of Lisowen, Ben of Quinpool and his son Newport. ⚠ WITNESSES: VERE HUNT, John Dwyer and Timothy Maher - so a Vere Hunt was standing in the White family's affairs in 1780, a generation BEFORE Richard White married Anne Lane, granddaughter of a Vere Hunt. Probate to John White 21 Jun 1780. His eldest son NEWPORT ('fourth of the name', b. 27 May 1760, m. Rebecca Bentley of Hurdlestown) took the lands but DIED WITHOUT SURVIVING ISSUE at Killaderry, co. Clare, his will of 30 Aug 1800 leaving KILMOYLAN AND DOON TO HIS BROTHER RICHARD - which is how our line came to hold Kilmoylan. THE AUTHOR: John Davis White (1820-1893) of Cashel, printer, antiquary and author of 'Cashel of the Kings' - a PROFESSIONAL ANTIQUARY, not a casual memoirist, which raises this book's standing appreciably. He was a GRANDSON of Newport White of Kilmoylan by Mary Ievers, through their youngest son Benjamin (b. c.1776), and therefore a NEPHEW of our Richard White. GRADING: strong where he transcribes wills, deeds and dates - he prints them at length and they check out; weaker on inherited family tradition, which he passes on without warrant. Graded accordingly throughout. HIS OWN STATEMENT OF METHOD, from the Preface (image ulsc:3183-11): 'As I shall set down nothing but what I believe to be true, these pages may supply useful evidence (BY THE WANT OF WHICH MONEY AND PROPERTY ARE OFTEN LOST TO THE RIGHTFUL OWNER) after I am gathered to my fathers' - and he adds that 'in after years it may, possibly, be of importance to prove the seniority of one branch of the family above another, or the connection which one party bore to another'. Marriage: Newport White (1728-1780) x Mary Ievers. CORRECTED July 2026: the wives of this and the next generation had been shifted up one generation. Burke's Irish Family Records ('White of Kilmoylan'): Newport White of Kilmoylan (1728 - 13 Apr 1780), builder of Kilmoylan House, Doon, m. Mary, eldest dau. of Col. Henry Ievers, J.P., of Mount Ievers, Co. Clare. Corroborated by the Mount Ievers Court family history (mountieverscourt.ie, 'Colonel Henry Ievers 1696-1758'): Mary, dau. of Henry Ievers by his 1st wife Anne Craven (m. 1724), m. 1st Newport White (d. 13 Apr 1780), 2nd Mr Harding of Dromsally. Chronology confirms: a dau. of a man b. 1696 could not be mother of a child b. 1728.
